Sculpture: Glass on Glass.
The image in this stained glass panel depicts the first space walk made by American astronaut Ed White in 1965. The Gemini 4 capsule is pictured in the lower left hand corner. These hand painted and stained images glow when back lit by natural or artificial light. Above the astronaut the moon hangs in a sky of flashed cobalt blue glass. The details on the moon are sandblasted. The shadow was created with crushed glass applied to the back of the panel. The canopy of clouds over the earth was created with a European hand blown glass. I was inspired to make this panel by my memory of the Sputnik launching into space. The newspaper article describing the historical event remained with me. Since then I have found space exploration exciting, significant and inspirational. The panel measures 16.75 x 29.25 x 0.3125 inches. It weighs 7.25 lbs.
