Steel vase measuring 80cmx280cm This work forms the first piece in a series of three which interact with the theme of desire in relation to the Greek myth of Pandora. Greek vases are often covered in engravings telling of myths and are some of the earliest representations of the myth of Pandora. This work sets the scene of the myth of Pandora with the vase being covered in steel plates engraved with sections of the myth and my own interactions with the myth and reworking of it. One such aspect is the figure of the brush engraved onto one of the lower plates. I made several brushes from objects i found when searching for metal on the beach. The brush has been used in a ritualistic manner in my work physically changing works by anointing them with salty water or covering words with paint. The writing of J.G Fraser in The Golden Bough on magic has been influential here to understand the power of the ‘object’. This piece is a vessel like, rusting as if it could be of historical significance. I have fused together fragments, repurposing these remnants of desires of mankind, fragments of machines and structures to create one whole object again. The scale of this work is vast, appearing as if it was taken from the workshop of the God of forging; Hephaestus. Carl Jung’s theories on the unconscious and arnima arnimus have been an important aspect to my research for this piece. This is linked to the myth of Pandora in the ways in which i have been reworking and interacting with the story, emphasising with her character and even creating some aspects of the work from her viewpoint.
