This piece is part of a larger ongoing series of assemblages, drawing inspiration from architectural motifs, both in drawing conventions as well as real life studies of facades and surface treatments. Each piece is designed digitally before being deconstructed and fabricated using a combination of traditional and contemporary fabrication processes here in my studio in Brighton. A dark blue pigment is applied to the individual elements before they are assembled together to create the final composition. Signed and numbered edition of 25. Bespoke commissions based on this composition are possible, just get in touch. Assemblage of oak, valchromat, ash and cork.

MAKE RELIEF is a multidisciplinary art & design studio created by Will Atkins. Since training as an architect I have been fascinated with materiality. Exploring how different materials work; understanding how they can be used together and trying to push the boundaries as to what is possible with them is at the core of what I create as a designer and maker. My work is therefore quite varied, creating both functional and more sculptural pieces as my relationship with a material, and the processes through which I work with it, evolve. Under the brand of ‘Make Relief’ I also work with other designers and creatives to solve various creative briefs - working in the space between fabricator and artist. I am fortunate to be part of a thriving 'maker' community here In Brighton, drawing upon the skills and experience of a variety of skilled craftspeople. I tend to adopt an architectural approach to my work, working collaboratively but also influenced by architectural forms and motifs. My more artistic output is a showcase of how materials like cork, recycled plastic and resins - to name a few - can be manipulated into unique objects where the final piece is the result of constant experimentation and collaboration.
