I make sculpture out of clay and sometimes plaster, paper and wood. I am interested in how vision is modeled in sculpture, with landscape, interior and figure – from memory, observation and imagination – as subject. My influences include television, cartooning, graphic arts, painting, body movement and architecture. Most-favorite artists include Ancients, Old Masters, primitives and Impressionists. I am attracted by the linear, painterly and architectural; point of view, perspective, level of detail, gesture, color. Figurative, landscape, genre. Structure and surface, content and form, the whole and its parts all work together to create an object. A challenge of traditional modeled sculpture is "getting it to stand," an imperative that predicates much of what followed. Using relief, high and low, allows sculpture to be more like painting —surface on a relatively flat three-dimensional ground. Some of my reliefs are paint with clay, others drawing, some explore space. My sculpture in the round negotiates the space around the object and the thing itself by using focus and perspective to bring the moving viewer into the work. I seek to go beyond the object's physical structure by extending the work invisibly into space using the viewer's cone of vision as it crosses the object's perspective to create an extra illusory dimension. Born in New York City in 1955, in 1999 I moved to a creek on the New Jersey shore, where I'd once enjoyed magical beach summers. I have been modeling or carving materials as long as I can remember — mud, snow, play-doh, sand and water, clay, wax, paper, cardboard, soap. I moved back to New York City in May 2020. I've also tangentially been involved with computers both conceptually and practically since a 1971 meeting with a branch of the DARPA network in an old janitor's closet next to my high school science classroom. Later on, some college friends were phrackers and code heads and eventually I got my first Apricot computer in 1987 and am now an uncertified Macintosh IT consultant and trainer for individuals and small businesses. I am also a web developer. The virtual nature of computers captures my imagination, however I never fell for the process of using computers to make art. I prefer to move around, modeling and drawing objects in space, uniquely resonant ways for making an inner journey I cannot make otherwise. www.kathyforer.com www.foreverink.com
