About The Artwork

Growing up in Qatar during its architectural modification، I witnessed a lot of construction. Many people had to leave their houses for a period of time because the government wanted to destroy and exchange the old houses with better looking ones. The constant renewal of road destructions, and the many skyscrapers that are constantly being built, are the outcome of an obsession my country has to make the best version of Doha. My intake with this issue is by making fun of it, by changing the solid environment of the material they use most (cinder blocks) into a wavy form. These cinder blocks show the duplication illusion, which effects the eye and mind.

Hana Al – Saadi is a Qatari artist who received her Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) from Virginia Commonwealth University in Qatar, 2015. She studied Painting and Printmaking, while pursuing her interest in sculpture making. During her period in VCUQ, she discovered her passion in carpentry and started making installations as she developed her conceptual thinking skills. From a young age, Al – Saadi had an interest at art making. During the age of thirteen she attended the Youth Art Center in Qatar, and studied academic/traditional art. This included drawing and painting portraits/still lifes. Later she taught herself how to use design programs to enhance her creativity further. Al – Saadi discovered her interest in conceptual art during her studies at VCUQ. She worked hard understanding what it meant to be a concept artist. Al Saadi’s efforts lead her to winning the Damien Hirst Art competition. Al – Saadi believes visual art is more powerful than words, because it has the power to exercise the viewer’s brains and make them question what they see. “I create artwork that makes viewers think about what they see even after they go home, without words killing their imagination.”
