Original Barn Owl chainsaw carving, wood sculpture carved with a chainsaw. I hand selected this Cottonwood Log from the Missouri River Bottoms of the Northern Plains.
Accented with sanding and torch burns.
Coated with a clear stain, and two coats of Exterior Spar Urethane.

The Barn Owl of the Northern Plains inspired me to create this piece. It is a beautiful, majestic creature. I hope viewers feel a sense of magic, wonder, a bit of nostalgia, and a connection to the natural world upon seeing this piece.

Chainsaws are a wonderful medium for woodcarving, as they can remove large amounts of material, but also create fine details. They highlight and accentuate naturally ocurring grains, knots, and patterns in the wood for a rustic, classy look.

Cottonwoods are distinctive trees along the Missouri River Bottoms. They are large and beautiful, and their interior is as well. Lewis and Clark traveled along the Missouri River during their 1804-1806 Expedition, noting the cottonwood trees and camping under them along the way. I gather cottonwood within a few miles of where some of these camps were. I only select cottonwood logs that are already dead and have fallen on their own, and I am a proponent of planting new cottonwood trees each year.
