This sculpture falls within the imagined Schlendrianocratie brand, a toy manufacturer exploring the complexity of the human condition and perceptions of childhood, memory, the decay of time and beauty. The concept derived from an article about a toy company producing soldiers that could be blown up in trenches with small charges- the company soon stopped production, yet the article remained vivid with the concept of toys reflecting the human condition coming to the fore. The sculpture has an amputated leg- was it created like this or has a parent removed a leg so as to match a wounded soldier, possibly a father or uncle returning from the front? The viewer is left to decide the story on this large-scale sculpture that has been embellished with gems and precious materials. Turquoise drops, smokey quartz in many cuts, iron pyrite, 18k gold donut beads, labradorite and emerald beads form the decoration on a multi-layered head, arms and legs. The original starting point was a vintage tweed that has been carefully layered up to look as though a child has pulled all the fur out. Berthold has a Mohawk hairstyle and a spike collar with faceted smokey quartz and a long Whitby jet spike at its center. The body is a patchwork of vintage fabrics and leather and overlaid with shredded cashmere. Cut steel buckles and pom-poms, suggest this was a circus bear though time has robbed him of the original context or meaning.

In 2013, Steel moved to Beirut, Lebanon, in order to write & launch a leading fashion degree at the Lebanese American University in collaboration with ELIE SAAB & UAL: University of the Arts, London. This program has allowed young designers to explore the myriad complexities of what it means to be young & Lebanese, including: sex, sexuality, gender, identity, political issues, the rubbish crisis and the roles of young people in the Middle East. Having worked in a number of dynamic countries, Steel is now examining his own practice through multi-layered approaches to questions about society, the decay of beauty, childhood memories & the (false) romance of a bygone era.
