About The Artwork

BIG PUFFA is a free-standing sculpture measuring 6ft 8in (H) x 5ft 8in (W) x 6ft 2in (D) excluding plinth or platform. He/She weighs approximately 400lb. The form comprises a hand molded, sealed fiberglass shell with a brilliant white polyester resin decorative skin. Within this white skin are embedded around 10000 3/4in, hand cast, highly-colored, translucent resin cylinders. These cylinders create a dazzling effect - small, three-dimensional ‘pools' of color glow and shimmer in the sunlight. This skin is then sanded multiple times to render an ultra-smooth and highly tactile finish. BIG PUFFA is an abstract and playful representation of (re-)generation and creation. Organic in shape, he/she is tactile and gestural work which invites viewers to engage through touch, embrace and physical mimicry. BIG PUFFA’s tiny head and emphatic pose with arms aloft undoubtedly speaks of unbridled and childlike joy, while his/her stylized, biomorphic form is reminiscent of a distorted, animated molecule or virus which is ever expanding and shifting. This sense of irrepressible transmutation is emphasized by the detail and finish of the sculpture. The deep colored cylinders move, merge and collect into pulsating clusters. These generate a cellular life force which propagates, spreads and coalesces, creating a dynamic mass of movement throughout the entire form. BIG PUFFA is clearly evocative of the exciting potential of growth wherein individuals - here represented by the cylinders - of diverse genders, sexualities, ages, racial and socio-economic backgrounds can come together to connect, develop, learn, renew and thrive. In simple terms, BIG PUFFA is a sculpture which speaks of a boundless future wherein biology, nature and humanity can create a space of endless possibility. BIG PUFFA is suitable for both interior and exterior placement, and can be placed either directly on the ground or mounted on a plinth.

Founded in 2011, uckiood is the studio of Swedish-American and British artists, Kim Rask and Missy Douglas. Missy is a former tutor of art history and fine art, holding a M.A. (Cantab) and Ph.D in History of Art from the University of Cambridge, UK. Kim is an alumnus of the University of Washington with a background in animation, sound and design. With initial bases in Brussels, Belgium and New York City, they immediately made a profound impact with their striking, bold - and often divisive - portfolio. They now work out of their Seattle studio, creating mixed-media sculpture and installations. Fueled by a strong desire to create moments of childlike wonder in everyday life, their single and multi-piece works use the visual language of childhood to reconnect with, and fully explore, the emotions and memories of the little people they - and you - once were. Under the aegis of uckiood, Missy & Kim have exhibited across the US and Europe in both solo and group shows, and their work has been selected for long-term and permanent public art placement. They have secured a wide range of festival and large event contracts, and have collaborated with government bodies, non-profit organizations and prominent corporate clients such as Facebook and Amazon. Their award-winning work is held in high-profile, private and public collections across the world. It has been featured in major news and culture/lifestyle publications such as BBC World News & Radio, The Independent (UK), Vogue (NL), designboom, My Modern Met, Psychology Today, Shanghai Daily, The Stranger, PublicDisplay.ART and Athens Voice, as well as being the subject of a 2018 webMD documentary and a 2021 Shine News podcast. They are currently on the ArtsWA Washington State Public Art Roster. Awards & Honors: 2023. Juror’s Award,10 x Tieton, Tieton WA 2022. Honoraria Artist Award, Burning Man Project 2015. UK GDST Alumna of the Year Award (Nomination) 2014. US National Council of Behavioral Health Award of Excellence (Nomination)
