ABOUT THE ARTWORK
This piece is a modern take on the traditional mexican rag dolls whose origins are most likely in the south of the central state of Queretaro, which have been called "Marias" but are more commonly called simply "rag dolls" (muñecas de trapo). Mexico has a long history of making rag dolls, but the ones known popularly from their appearance nationally, especially in tourist venues may date back only to the 1970s, part of a project to enhance income opportunities for Otomi women in the Amealco municipality. With the augmented reality, the doll comes alive, showing us her colorful soul. Edition of 8. The piece itself weighs 5kg and the metal base another 5kg. The main figure is made of bronze and the base is made of painted steel.

YUNUENE (b. 1975, Mexico City) earned a Graphics Design degree from the Universidad Intercontinental. Her collection of desconstructivist paintings arise from a desire to inspire the viewer to discover their deep spirit, to kindle self-confidence and pursuit of creative ideas, and to celebrate strength in individuality. Yunuen’s artistic style encompasses a multitude of personal, artistic, and cultural references that reflect the plurality of her personal life and contemporary social issues. She often plays with viewers’ perceptions of the body, gender and the metaphysical. Yunuen lives and works in Mexico City. Esparzas’s contemporary art has been exhibited at emblematic museums including the Museo Soumaya, Museo Nacional de Arte MUNAL, Centro Nacional de las Artes and Mexico City’s Metro System. She has exhibited internationally in New York City, Vienna, Madrid, Málaga, Montreal, Bari Italy and San Diego.
