The work draws on the millennia of ancient ceramic forms, exploring the anthropomorphization of the vessel and the unique projection of qualities bestowed by the observer. Readings of the work are therefore individual and wide-ranging. Using black vulcan stoneware clay, the pieces are unglazed letting the fired material be exposed in its raw, matt, and rough state.

Johanna began working with ceramics during her time at Harvard to use the material to explore concepts related to her architectural projects. Today, Johanna works as a ceramic artist producing sculptural work using wheel-thrown and hand-building techniques. Her current series of work draws on the history of the vessel, subtly subverting classic forms to create anthropomorphic shapes. Johanna is a German-American artist working in England.
