About The Artwork

The making process of my sculptures are a combination of bee’s wax, string, cardboard, wood and paper tape. This quickly evolves into an intuitive exercise, with shapes, forms and textures continuously being pushed around, until there is an evidence of something exquisite being created. The prepared model then goes through an unconventional bronze casting process. It gets enclosed in plaster, put in a kiln and heated up until it becomes an empty shell of ashes, where molten bronze is poured in, to create the sculpture. All the way through this process the bronze picks up and develops its own surface marks, making every piece unique with a personality expressed by its texture and experienced by the touch. Once cast and cleaned, the bronze is ready for patina. The patination process is an area of constantly research for environmentally friendly options to colour bronze metal. Much like in the Italian Renaissance I have dabbed on organic patinas made from natural oils and natural resins but its also possible to achieve a range of colours with common products such as vinegar, eggs, etc. - either by immersion or by direct application. For this collection of bronze vessels, I have used a traditional Japanese patina made of iron scraps and vinegar. This solution was used during the Heian periods of Japan, when ladies of the aristocratic class were using it to dye their teeth black as a form of fashion. The patina process is repeated until the desired colour is achieved, and sealed with a thin coat of bee’s wax.
