Sculpture, Steel on Stainless Steel

The butterfly of Doom, is the most time involved sculpture I’ve done. It was inspired by a combination of influences, from the large wings, on the nose Union Pacific freight trains, the street art, featuring Angel wings, snd the mass of Butterflies I see in my own travels. It’s a combination of repurposed vintage car parts, from the 1950’s, aircraft parts, from the 1940’s, industrial tools from the 1920’s, and vintage Railroad Hardware from the late 1800’s, when the Southern Pacific laid tracks down the California Coast. This sculpture is decorated with over 54lbs of Vintage Masonry nails, and a variety of vintage auto & industrial machinery gears, chains, nuts, & bolts. This piece took exactly 100 hrs of fabrication, to complete. Like all of my sculptures, it started as just a small idea, & grew from every addition. This was not a complete idea or vision! This sculpture transformed & changed with every piece and feature, until reaching a point, where I felt it was complete. I prefer to build sculptures in metal, using mostly repurposed Vintage pieces, tgat I have collected over many years. My hope, is to share my creativity, and show the beauty of these relics, combined to create a new life and give the pieces a collective beauty! This piece, squared it’s name from a local 10 year old girl. She very firmly stated, this is “the butterfly of doom”. That name has stuck, from then on. Standing almost 8’ tall, with a wingspan of 7’; this piece definitely demands attention!
