Way back I think the inspiration is the curves of the Finnish architect and designer Alvar Aalto as most known from his vases with curved brim. Now these curves are dragged out along the figure, and more normally curved vertically across the figure. I like the curves in and out i several dimensions, and thought it would be good to follow up with the softness of the warm rusty patination. These two properties unites in the sculpture but they also are intended to have some contradiction. On the one hand the rust relates to metal, and is also a little hard compared with the curves especially lengthwise. On the other hand reddish in the rust is a warm color that somehow contradicts the rather strict curves and the symmetry left-right. The figure is made in stoneware clay, then burned (but only to non-stoneware clay temperature, so no guarantee for outdoor use). The color/ patination is made of real tiny iron particles dissolved in a binder, and then chemical oxidised to real rust. I have done it 6-7 times so if the figure gets a scratch, there will still be rust in the lower levels of the patination. The proces was finished with an UV-protection layer of varnish to prevent the oxidation to continue (but no guarantee; the color can and probably do change a little by time). I have spend so many hours with this figure that I decided to make a silicone mould from it. So, I maybe will make more like this, but it will never be the exact same figure and certainly not in a ceramic version (that is not possible from this mould). So, if interested, I can make it in other materials and colors.

Between childhood and my children's childhood I nearly never was creative in this way. But then, when my children began to play with clay and plaster, I returned to the creative arts. First, I worked with and attended classes in clay figure modelling. Then I also worked with more or less abstract sculpture making in paper clay, wood, plaster, resins - and got occupied with mould making in silicones and castings in plaster and resins. Also, a few works of paintings. Born 1951. Living in central Copenhagen, Denmark.
