Made from recycled tin cans this sculpture, replicating a crushed bottle of Chanel No 5 perfume, belongs to the series of works entitled Distinguishing marques. "Distinguishing marques" condenses a number of sociologically speaking concepts, including an attempt to re-appropriate the stigma of luxury iconography. The series title - a play on the term "distinguishing marks" used by police to identify people - adds a satirical and dramatic dimension to the works: notably by emphasising the coexistence of a not very noble (or distinguished) material - tin cans - alongside the production of a work that is so aesthetically complete that at first glance it could pass for the branded (marque) goods it seeks to replicate. “Chanel No 5” is an industry legend. This iconic perfume brand has dominated the market since its inception in the 1920s Synonymous with classic style and chic design Chanel epitomises luxury and aspiration. It is no surprise therefore that Gekko has chosen this global brand image as the standard-bearer for this latest series. Reflecting Gekko’s preference for maintaining the integrity of the material used, the tin cans have been remodelled by hand, shaped rather than cut, and the sculpture is largely unpainted – the metal objects remain in their “raw” state – with the natural colour tones accentuated by the artist. There is both a simplicity and playfulness to this artwork. This should not detract however from the intrinsic technical challenges presented in this sculpture. With a few carefully arranged tin cans and a hand-painted logo Gekko succeeds in presenting a work of art which is as elegant as the original object of inspiration.

Contemporary artist Norman Gekko delights in parodying the hypocrisy and excesses of western culture. Most often, Gekko produces multiple individual pieces of work as part of a series (inbred series, Beehives, Paper balls etc); willingly and enthusiastically generating new works with intensity, until exhausting both the subject and the artist.
