Sculpture, Wood on Wood
Size: 58 W x 36 H x 13 D in
Ships in a Crate
This piece takes a traditional nicho or niche (a small cabinet to honor a saint, a loved one, or display special items) and brings it into a world of magical realism. This winged cabinets explore themes of hope, freedom, light, and play. The hope of this piece was born out of the 2020 COVID 19 Quarantine, when hummingbirds began to frequent the flowers around Josiah's studio. The three wing positions on this cabinet are set at varied angles, wrapping the viewer in the movement and energy of the piece. The ruby red is a reference to the ruby-throated hummingbirds that frequent our flowers. The agave motif carved into the crest again references the natural influences in this piece. The cabinet is built using age-old woodworking techniques. The carcass is joined with proud dovetails and the dividers are cleanly set in dados to allow for wood expansion and contraction. The wings are attached with wing nuts to ease transportation of the piece and to continue with the wing motif. The piece is designed to be wall hung (a french cleat is built into the back panel, and an opposing cleat is included for mounting to the wall). The cabinet itself measures 25" tall, 15" wide, and 6" deep. The overall height of the piece is 36", the wing span is 58", and the depth (including wings' forward projection) is 13".
