ABOUT THE ARTWORK

‘Collapsing Spinnaker’ forms part of my collection of stylised marine sculpture. It is hand carved, as all my sculptures are. The process of making a plywood sculpture is rather long, as there is a complex design process, and then I have to laminate many layers together, before I can start on the actual carving. These sculptures are not "bent" wood - they are carved from a solid "block" of plywood. As with all carving, there is no going back. Mistakes are permanent, and therefore every stroke of the tool must be carefully thought out. I love to sail (when I get the chance), and am always inspired by the many interesting and beautiful shapes formed by the sails in the wind. I have strived to encapsulate here, in a very solid medium, the totally flexible feeling of a sail. Plywood works well for these sculptures as the grain effect produced by the many layers of the wood enhances and emphasises the contours created. The sculpture shown here has been sold, but it can be commissioned. The price will depend on the size of the carving. Please feel free to contact me to discuss a commission. SHIPPING AND RETURNS
Delivery Time:

Typically 5-7 business days for domestic shipments, 10-14 business days for international shipments.

I live and work in Kent, in the UK and have been a full time sculptor for over 20 years. My first career was working with animals, and this still has a large impact on my life and work. I spend quite a lot of time carefully selecting the medium for my sculptures that will best produce the effect I want to achieve. Maybe this is by the use of the figuring in the grain of a unique piece of timber, or perhaps by utilising the striking effect achieved with the contemporary medium of plywood. Sometimes the smooth effect of bronze is the best way to portray an idea. I am self-taught, although I have spent much time talking with and exchanging information with carvers and artists from all over the world. My works are also produced in limited edition bronze and silver. I am a professional member of the Society of Wildlife Artists (part of the Federation of British Artists).
