rough cypress wood, precious material from a huge cypress tree, is used by the artist to represent the deep pain of a mother, immobile and soundless, holding a dead, sick, injured, suffering child. Cypress is the tree of death,, traditionally planted near cemeteries and it is left unpolished except for the shoulder of the child which has been polished by the touch of the hands of people that have place their hands of the shoulder, like a sacred symbol of compassion and empathy
