Author: William R. Marquina B. Title: Cosmic Waterspouts Style: abstract Technique: assembled aluminum Media (materials): aluminum and ink oil Dimensions: 42 cm x 29 cm x 21 cm ( 16,53” x 11,42” x 8,26”) Weight: 800 gr (1,76 lb) Year: 2016 My sculpture, “Cosmic Waterspouts” alludes to the theme of black holes, what in my work I call cosmic waterspouts or cosmic swirls, is known as the effect that scientists say they have the black hole in the cosmos, are how gigantic sucking tunnels of galaxies, stars and therefore light, there where my sculpture I have compared them with waterspouts which are elongated and extend in serpentine curves at great distances from the surface to the atmosphere. In my sculpture can be seen four pins that allude to the waterspouts and aluminum that jut from a flat base and are embedded in the first oval Cone, then continue to climb only two waterspouts that will pass through the second smallest oval cone. Within each oval cone there are textures made with gouge marks on the inner surface of the aluminum, so I can create an effect of absorption or dispersion very interesting. I do not think that there is any explicit reason regarding the reason for making this sculpture, if instead a personal feeling that I feel for the unknown, might be the mystery from whence we came, the very existence, which is unable to describe beyond that not gives me the reality or life, or is also the result of wanting to escape from this world really I don't know. William Marquina was born in Mérida, Venezuela. Attracted by the works of great masters such as Picasso and Leonardo, at the age of 11 he participated in an outdoor Sunday painting workshop. After graduating in visual arts from the Universidad de Los Andes, he studied a master's degree in philosophy, followed by an unfinished doctorate, and was a short-term visual arts professor at the same university. From now on, William will pursue his passion for art by experimenting with different themes, techniques, styles and media. Disappointed by the unstable situation in his country, he emigrated to the city of Quito in 2019 where he currently lives and produces his works in the Oskan-huera painting studio, cloistered during the pandemic of 2020 and 2021, he will insist on his series Perceptions William's production has been experimentally versatile and challenges us with series characterized by the desire to search, study and complement the archaic and contemporary. His series are notable: Brillo, Picasso Copy, Matisse Copy, Da Vinci Copy and Aperceptions. In the latter, he highlights us in painting, the subjective complexity in the world of perceptions. In 2023 he exhibited his individual retrospective "Imbrications in painting" in the city of Quito; the International Painting exhibition at Casal Català Quito, 2021 and "Exhibition of Ecuadorian Painting" at the Mayor's Office of Quito, 2019. Other important individuals were: "Cartographies of the Terrestrial and Transterranean", Merida 2012; "Care. Path and Limit", 2007 and "Essences", 2007. Awarded the First Prize of Arts for University Students, in 2001.
