I created a series of metal animals and spheres, called 'Metal Morphs'. Using found and bought pieces of metal I create the head of an animal first. Without a believable head, the rest of the animal falls flat. I used more than a thousand metal components like bolts, nuts and washers, collected over the years and bought in a home improvement store. I use these pieces like Legos, except I create my own designs and building blocks.
Every sculpture I made is fitted onto a PVC sphere, covered up by metal parts. The dragon has glass eyes, and an adjustable head and tail stance. The head can be rotate by the nose. Do not handle it by the mane, it is the only fragile part on the dragon. The tail can rotate freely and can be handled anywhere without chance of damage. There are razor sharp talons on the claws and wings, because it's a dragon and its fierce and dangerous. But: keep away from children and pets. The dragon must be placed on a scratch free surface, as the talons will damage soft surfaces like wood and plastic.
All the different metals are grouped and organized over the body to create different sheens and reflections. The design and nature of the sculpture is such that over the years the metals will weather and age differently, adding contrast and life to the sculpture.
The wings and tail are detachable, for easier and more secure transportation. The wings are marked L and R and slot into a tube on the flanks of the body. They lock into place by rotating a pin behind a screw. The tail is connected by a threaded wire, placed into a threaded insert. It is connected by turning the largest part of the tail, closest to the body.
