Decorated with Iron, black and yellow slip, with finger spots and a sgraffito design. It is one of a set of six, all of which represent my love of Dartmoor National Park, it's rugged beauty and its wild landscape and weather. Dotted with ancient woodlands with oak's twisted by the wind and rain, granite tor's surrounded by mists over rolling hills covered in bracken and heather carved by the many rocky streams and rivers, give this place a quite mysterious feeling. This is part of what makes Dartmoor so special to me and inspired this work. I work in earthenware clay and use an old, 1950's treadle wheel to loosely throw my work on. I decorate my pieces with clay slips coloured with oxides and my designs are expressed by using sgraffito as a method and often painted, again with coloured clay slips. Much of what I use is found in the landscape around me, it helps me feel closer to the work I am making, and for me gives it more meaning. I have always been close to the land and nature and the use of simple designs of a more abstract and expressionist nature give me the freedom to depict in simple terms how I feel.

I am a self taught ceramic artist and potter living in Devon in the United Kingdom. I became a potter after working as a photojournalist and documentary photographer for fifteen years. () I decided to change my life after being diagnosed with a brain tumour; I was operated on to remove part of it in March 2014 and felt, during my recovery, the work I was doing in and around conflict situations would not be possible anymore since the operation has left me far less aware and without my balance. I fell in to ceramics during my recovery and have never looked back. It has completely taken hold of me and is developing in to a medium that I use to relate to the world and myself.
