About The Artwork

Society's obsession with attaining physical perfection at any cost is the inspiration for 'Dying to be Barbie'. I created this sculpture which depicts a 'perfect' female torso. I wrapped a body with plaster bandages before polishing it with gold wax. The torso’s interior and base is decorated in decoupagé headlines from red top tabloids and lifestyle magazines which illustrate the modern media's fixation on how females should look in the 21st Century. The bandages depict us ‘holding it together’ - trying to look perfect on the outside and wrestling with our struggles on the inside.
