About The Artwork

This piece is part of a larger idea, which is a grouping of portraits of animals. Perhaps this grouping is located on a grand piano, showcased as so many families do. These portraits are special because they constitute Mother Earth's living family of animals to whom we also belong. Each and every one is special and so deserves a beautiful portrait. I was inspired by ancient Greek and Roman portraits made with the ancient technique called Verre Eglomise. This technique enjoyed popularity in upper class circles well into the 1800's both in Europe and America. These portraits are reverse glass drawings on silver or gold leaf, which are then coated over with black gesso, showing the black drawing lines on the front side and placed in an ornate frame.

Laura grew up in Chicago surrounded by the influence of the Chicago Imagists. Her work reflects the dual interests of story-telling and theatrical production – the building blocks for her consistent interest in Sculptural Installations and Narrative Tableau. In the late 1970’s Larson moved to Los Angeles where she became involved in the feminist art movement including participation in Judy Chicago’s The Dinner Party, a controversial, ground–breaking feminist art piece, The Women’s Caucus for Art, and Rachel Rosenthal’s “DBD” workshop. Over the last 10 years Larson’s work has touched on 2 main topics: our relationship to nature and our animal co-inhabitants; and investigations into the cultural, historical, spiritual through-lines of the female trinity: mind, body and spirit.
