About The Artwork

This ornamental structural ceramic sculptural vessel is inspired by the dynamic spikey form of the sea urchin, or Echinoidea, and might also be said to have a star like appearance, hence “Echinostar”. It is a further development of the “Echinostar Sculpture” featured elsewhere on my profile, and multiplies it into a tower like structure of spikes and organic flourishes. The overall effect is of a contemporary biomorphic sculpture with the order and symmetry of a classical column, balancing the organic vigour of nature with a more considered architectural formality. The gloss black and turquoise opalescent glazes overlays a turquoise underglaze that is revealed at the many extremities, giving the whole a translucent marine shimmer.

I am a freelance ceramic artist living and working in London. I design, create and sell handmade ceramic pieces inspired by my own experiences and interests, as well as taking commissions, which I produce from my bright and modern garden studio. I was a full time 16-18 art teacher for many years, before deciding to devote more of my time and effort to my own creative practice.
