About The Artwork

Primary coloured paint packed tightly into coils offer a striking line in a pure white chunky wood box. Simple yet sophisticated. Elevator offers an exciting perspective on contemporary minimalism. Inspired by Melbourne’s response to growing COVID cases in the inner city tower blocks. Residents were confined within, the only journeys they could take being up and down the elevators. Elevator continues my interest in an alternative life for paint, one where it is free from the canvas. The work is made from entirely from paint, coiled and wedged within a channel cut into its wooden frame. This work is fitted with D rings and wire for immediate hanging. TOn the back, you will find my signature, initials, title, and year. It is registered on the NRAA (National Registry for Australian artists). The work comes with details of the registration and a Certificate of Authenticity. THE LOCKDOWN COLLECTION   “Paintings that believe they are Sculptures” Layers of dried paint that is surplus from my other artworks provide the starting point for these highly dimensional and uniquely sculptural works. This series, seen through the lens of a global pandemic, is a response to what would otherwise be discarded.

Artist Statement “When the paint is dry my work is just beginning”. The thought that paint could be capable of independence from the canvas has been the driving force behind Julee’s art practice. It led to her process of creating paintings on plastic waiting for the paint to dry before she removes it. The unsupported material has an inherent flexibility that allows Julee to investigate her interest in textile, collage, and sculptural techniques. Through cutting, layering, moulding, weaving, and gluing, each creation is the result of many hours of meticulous and detailed work. An artist since childhood, Julee holds a BFA (Sculpture and Painting) from Curtin University, Perth. She is also the author of the book Sculptural Secrets for Mosaic (Schiffer Publishing Ltd, USA). Her works can be found in collections, both public and private, worldwide.
