About The Artwork

Note: This piece will be made to order and you should allow an extra week for delivery. Thanks! Each piece I do like this is a little different due to subtle color, tonal and textural variation. They love mid century modern and minimal interiors. Each of these beloved pieces is made by hand, "hecho en Guatemala". My story: After the birth of our daughter, we decided to take an extended 4 month vacation from NYC to the sublimely serene and beautiful Lake Atitlan, Guatemala. Lacking the ability to find quality art materials to make my abstract paintings, I decided to start making art from whatever I could find locally. After this transition, my art was forever changed, and I was so enamored with the people and culture of Guatemala that we decided to make this our home. Pita Plastica is what the locals use throughout Central America for packing everything imaginable and carrying their wares to and from the local markets. I choose to work with this material because it is constantly evolving. The way the light is absorbed and reflected causes the work to subtly change throughout the day. Because the work uses a common commercially made material that has a beautiful and subtle sheen to it, the pieces have a strange familiarity and pop-like feel to them. The use of contemporary geometric abstract compositions lend them a sleek modernity.

Kurtis Brand is a multi-disciplinary artist. He uses art and music as mediums, and his work is a meditation practice. Brand expresses in art what he realizes through meditation. "I feel that this world we occupy is on the brink of extreme change and it is our job as citizens of this planet to make a positive stand environmentally, emotionally, and intellectually and contemplative practice is essential to help our culture evolve into the potential of kindness, love, compassion, and empathy." This part of his work attempts to express the connection we have as people and the oneness of all sentient beings. For the last decade, he has lived in New York, Guatemala, San Francisco, and Connecticut amongst and passionately absorbed in a culture of vast extremes which lends a poetic, immediate and visceral quality to his work. The quotidian material culture he interacts with becomes the inspiration for his work. Materials like volcanic ash from the active and violent volcano, corn masa, the dough that is used to make tortillas that provides sustenance to an extremely impoverished nation, natural plant dyes, upcycled reused denim fabrics, sustainably farmed wood for my frames, natural twine made from the maguey cactus, concrete and rebar are all material aspects that interest him.
