Specialising in conceptual sculptural installation, I produce process-based work concerned with absence, trace, memory and the perception of space. By its nature past experience becomes partially lost, and this loss invokes nostalgia. As a result, humans become sentimental, projecting memories of lived experience onto objects and places in an attempt to remember. It is this exploration of human connection, transitional objects and the narrative created that drives my work, exploring both collective memory and social unconsciousness. The notion of the absent person, and how that absence can be present, is prominent throughout and notions of control, chaos, fragility and strength are central to my practice. The psychological concept of 'social unconsciousness' and the impact that our social and cultural experiences have on our memory, personality and perspective is something which I manipulate, drawing on this as a means of understanding how the audience will interpret my work, and using signifiers to influence this understanding. I am also Director of Roots Gallery Projects, a social enterprise arts organisation which commissions and creates contemporary arts projects and provides creative professional development services to emerging artists. Roots Gallery Projects works with artists, curators, arts managers and other creative professionals to produce and commission intellectually and artistically challenging contemporary visual art and increase access to the arts through education, participation and supported engagement. Our mission is to facilitate positive social change through creative collaboration, education and artistic interventions. We are based in the Midlands but work regionally, nationally and internationally.
