ABOUT THE ARTWORK

ISCPP0029 (Metal on Paper) - Saehyun Paik Oct 2017 / 12 3/8" x 12 3/8" x 1.5" (depth) Pencil on Paper with Resin "A common sensory characteristic of metal is its coolness, and while graphite certainly fits this description, a visual and tactile change occurs when pencil meets paper. The cool, metallic quality of the material takes on a warmer tone, which is a central theme of my expression through this sculpture" Saehyun Paik 2017.10.14

Saehyun Paik (b. 1987, South Korea) is a quietly passionate artist currently finding inspiration in the heart of New York City. From a young age, Paik's fascination with color, composition, Mise-en-scene, design, and unconventional beauty has been a guiding force. Growing up amidst talented artists in a competitive environment during her teenage years, she dedicated herself to honing her technical skills.   In her youth, Paik pursued her dream of becoming an artist by freelancing as an illustrator and designer for magazines. Following high school, she ventured into the commercial design industry as a concept designer. Eventually, she took a brave step, leaving her job to attend the Samsung Art and Design Institute before embarking on a journey to the United States.   Paik pursued her education at SADI (Samsung Art and Design Institute) in South Korea before making the move to the United States in 2010. Her artistic prowess has been showcased in numerous gallery and museum exhibitions, highlighting her distinctive perspective and creative talent.   Notably, Saehyun Paik served as an artist in residence at Chashama from 2019 to 2023, contributing to the vibrant artistic community. This residency period allowed Paik to delve deeper into her artistic exploration and contribute meaningfully to the cultural landscape. Currently, she quietly continues her artistic journey as a mid-career artist in the U.S., embracing the subtleties of her craft.   Through her multifaceted journey, Saehyun Paik has evolved into an artist with a rich blend of technical expertise, diverse experiences, and a deep passion for the fine arts. Her work continues to captivate audiences, offering a unique and compelling perspective on color, composition, and the beauty found in the uncommon.   Saehyun Paik faced challenges adapting to social situations during her early years, leading her to discover a unique form of communication through art materials. In her ongoing exploration of these 'conversations,' Paik integrates two or more media in each artistic process. Having developed her communication style through painting repetition, she continues to explore human experiences without direct representation.   Paik's artistic quest is rooted in a search for elements lacking in the modern human experience.
