About The Artwork
These sculptural objects are house plants (cacti in my case) made of glass. The distinctive natural appearance og the cactus is a result of adaptions to conserve water in dry and/or hot environments. They are firm, have coulor and content - my plants, in contrast, are fragile, transparent and empty. The glass pieces have cracks and imperfections. Deliberately broken like cracking piececs of ice with a real thing trying to grow from inside. My choice of the cactus in this particular context is based on stereotypical qualities of this tropical plant growing in areas never exposed to ice and at the same time a very typical “easy to keep” house plant. I want to bring to the viewer an experience of what would happen, if the normal human surroundings suddenly froze. The coming of a new ice age. Apart from the pure visual effect this art work refers to the current global warming debate.

Maria Koshenkova I was born and raised in St Petersburg in Russia 1981, but living and working in Copenhagen for the last 7 years. I got my MA degree in glass and ceramic at the St Petersburg Design and Art Academy and afterwards studied glass at the Danish Design School and at Kalmar University ( Sweden ). I have exhibited in in Russia ,UK,Scandinavia, all around Europe and and Japan I use glass as a main media for my sculptures The last years I have also contributed space specific installations to a number of international exhibitions, using other materials than glass I produce unique jewelry pieces as well and have my own little brand and company to do that-"koshmar jewelry"
