Invincible Print

I was asked to create this artwork for the 5 Year Anniversary of the Boston Marathon Bombings for a Museum Show in April of 2018. The Museum director was one of three judges who voted my artwork "Perfect Harmony" to be the centerfold for the July/August issue of Artscope Magazine. She thought my unique style of art would be an interesting addition to the show and if I would be willing to create an artwork with someone in a racing wheelchair that represented that day.. What she didn't realize was that my wife and I were there the day of the bombings to watch my best friend run the race, which gave me a personal connection to that day. I heard the first bomb go off and then the second and knew things were going to take a turn for the worse. Through the chaos, confusion and emotional shock of that day, we luckily all made it home safely that evening but many did not. I decided that if I was to create this artwork for this show, it would have to be my best artwork ever in my 20 year career. If my artwork was going to represent a tragic event such as this, then my heart, soul and artistic creativity had to worthy of it. For two I weeks I sketched, looked into the wood grains of several pieces of birch plywood and came up with nothing. I e-mailed the Museum director back and said nothing was working and maybe I was not up for the challenged. She encouraged me to not give up, to take my time and that they would be willing to give me as much time as needed to accomplish this. Another week went by and still nothing. As I was about to e-mail her again, to decline the project, I remembered I had a stray 24" x 36" piece behind the couch that I forgot there. I took it out and withing two minutes I saw the outline of a helmet, I ran into the kitchen and got two different size pan lids and traced them to represent the wheels and had it all sketched by the next day. I then took tools and my talents and worked on this for over a month until I felt it was worthy enough to represent that day. "Invincible" represents the heroic perseverance to overcome seemingly insurmountable challenges. Never let anything get in your way of achieving your true potential!
