This work is a bold counter point or anchor to a series of seven minimalist 3D panels I made for an exhibition in 2017. The overall series title suggests our civic responsibility to respond to the alarm signals about rising temperatures on the planet and climate change. Inspired by the colour field paintings of the 40s and 50s, these original works were made by applying acrylic paint and rubbing charcoal on decommissioned firehose, then attaching them to wood boards in an abstract configuration. This large heavy piece, (untitled 8), was created by carefully weaving the charcoal-rubbed and brightly painted firehose together, with an eye on pattern. Weaving has traditionally been women's work, yet fighter fighting still attracts few females. Is the art work an ode to firefighters? Is it a suggestive of a vessel? Is it meant to suggest fatigue and collapse? I leave the interpretation of this abstract work up to the viewer. I merely employ the building material as metaphor, ironically reclaiming hose that carries water and rendering it into a new form in my art practice, exploring paradox in the climate crisis era in which we find ourselves. .

I've enjoyed an eclectic professional art career for over thirty years. I'm a practicing visual artist, a documentary filmmaker, culture sector writer, and former contemporary dance choreographer. In collaboration with landartgenerator.org, I'm developing an international art competition for public art/engineering infrastructure designs addressing the need for coastal erosion mitigation in Nova Scotia. All things climate change adaptation intrigue me, hence my forest fire art panel series, currently for sale on this site.
