Art Description

Sculpture: Wax, Plaster, CONCRETE on Other.

Sculpture: Wax on Other.

Beeswax is my chosen material. Applied raw or tinted, each skull are covered with its own and unique “skin”, revealing an organic, a carnal appearance. Beeswax allows embodying the skull – static and mineral object – with a new skin expressing through various motifs and colors an emotion.

My hypervanitass trives to revisit and rewrite the Memento-mori theme in a contemporary language.

The face of an unknown denuded skull can be reproduced based upon the soft facial tissue thickness, which overlays the bony structure of the skull. To create a human face, forensic artists will place an average of 21 facial tissue markers at specific anatomical locations. Based on these forensic techniques, Hypervanitas uses the opposite method in order to create the corresponding skull from a known and famous face. Moreover, by linking a skull to a famous and powerful existing person, that concept is trying to get back in touch with
the initial and non overused meaning of Memento-mori.

Also, each Hypervanitas can be adorned with a crown which is inspired by a famous luxury watch logo. These crowns symbolize an epitome form of our vanities and illusions.
