Basalt Stone on Steel. Healing Circles have been a subject of mine for over 15 years. Originally inspired by a Seattle artist, David Green, and my sister Deborah Namm. Circles have been a common symbol of healing from ancient cultures to modern day cultures. Now during the pandemic I find myself with a new studio (A building that I just bought) but unable to get my electricity hooked up. So I am concentrating on very small sculptures that I can do with limited electric power. This has turned out to be a pleasant surprise because I can explore new ideas and complete a piece within days instead of the usual weeks or months. As with all my sculptures I concentrate on exploring the different textures that I can bring out from the stone. In Little Healing Circle #2 you can see a high polish, a medium polish, the interior of the stone and the machined surface from the core drill mounted on a welded steel base.

I was born and grew up in New York City. Coincidentally I was born in the same neighborhood that Isamu Noguchi had his home and studio in Long Island City Queens. He later became one of the main influences to my art. I consider myself a sculptor but I have also taken sculpture techniques and tools to create paintings. When I work in stone, usually basalt, my number one objective is to show the beauty of the stone. I attempt to contrast the different textures and surfaces inherent in the media. An example is putting a highly polished surface next to the skin or rind of the stone which has been oxidized for thousands of years contrasting a highly machine surface against a natural ancient one. I have exhibited works around the country, created several public art pieces in the Northwestern and Southwestern United States. For eight years I was the resident artist at the “Urban Garden Habitat” sculpture garden in Fall City Washington. I now reside and work in Southern New Mexico.
