Rae Garcia is a Brooklyn based ceramic artist with a formal background in art and design from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Her ceramic work is an exploration of the natural world and its elements, embracing both its beauty and its fragility. She strives to make art that reflects the rhythm of nature, letting the process of creating be a slow and intuitive one. When Rae began working with ceramics, she had a desire to control the outcome of her work, fixating on an illusion of the final piece. Rae eventually realized that much of what she created lies beyond her control, allowing her to collaborate with the natural state of the clay, glaze and the fire, bestowing a sense of peace within her work. Rae’s technique consist of building all her vessels by hand. She hand rolls each coil and delicately pinches them together. Rae uses her hands as her primary tool, allowing her to energetically connect with the clay. Each pinch and stroke becomes frozen in time. Though she begins her process with simple sketches to outline the desired shape, she lets intuition guide her during the building. Leading Rae to a final form that reflects her spirit within the material. Follow Rae's journey and process on instagram
