Indonesia
Live and work in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Work focuses on social and personal narratives which he tells through installation, print making, painting, sculpture and performance. Arya uses various media in his work to communicate and transform his ideas. Lately his focus has shifted to paper and ceramic, a medium he find simple and unique, often found in the traditional arts, about all it's environment friendly. For Arya, working with paper take him on a journey back to his childhood, a great inspiration in his work. Not many Indonesian artists create works using a humanoid-creature alter ego as Arya Pandjalu does. In fact, avian-humanoid—a cross between man and bird—has become a singular identity for Arya. The alter ego creature is a reflection of Arya's childhood, when he used to hunt for birds with his air shotgun. Long afterwards, after Arya entered the art world, he began to feel regret and remorse at his bad treatment towards these creatures of flight. He continues to sharpen his empathy towards birds, and gradually Arya has imaginatively mutated into a hybrid of “bird-headed” human. Arya has participated in several local and international projects and exhibitions including the Jakarta Contemporary Ceramics Biennale #4, Taoyuan Land Art Festival, Taiwan 2015, Biennale Jogja XI – Equator #1, Beyond the East, Macro Museum, Roma, “Sama- Sama Mural Project “ 2003 in San Francisco, Landing Soon Residency Programme at Cemety Art House in Yogyakarta in 2006, a residency at Kosmopolis in Den Haag, The Netherlands in 2010, and a residency at Bamboo Curtain Studio in Taipei, Taiwan in 2012.
