Sculpture, Found Objects on Wood

In an organic atmosphere you find a pink object which is used to spread toes. The object is very reminiscent of a motif by the painter Henri Matisse, hence the title. Materials: a wooden shell, a round mirror and a toe spreader on a decorative wooden leaf under a food cover. This is all covered by a metal garden decoration.

Netherlands
Raised on a farm in the Netherlands I was always an introverted, shy, almost autistic dreamer and started painting. My art teacher 'discovered' me so on my 18th I went to Art Academy. Although the first year offered a broad orientation painting became my specialization. In 1984 I graduated and moved to Amsterdam. Through the years my paintings were figurative and abstract. Since 2017 I wanted to work 3-dimensional by making sculptures and installations. In 2020 my working with used products started. For that I went to thrift shops to find second hand products to make my installations. These objects are real and pure, not painted or sculpted. There was a special focus on children's attributes because they bring difficult ideas back to children's proportions. Household objects were also often used because they are common and easy to transform to another representation or function. I make sculptures or little installations by combining objects. The artworks mostly consist of piled up, or fitted together objects. One could use the word ready made, but the simple presentation of only one object is avoided by confronting one object with another. (Preferably I use different materials, to accentuate the uniqueness of each material). Mostly the objects are made of glass, wood, plastic and metal. In a way they are still lives. The combination of objects makes the content. Some are about the special situation of the year 2020. Though it's a bit open it's often contemplative, humorous and surreal.
