Fan Yu was born in Beijing, China at the foot of the historic Imperial City. His parents devoted their lives to careers in Chinese classical architectural. Fan never systematically studied sculpture. Perhaps his uncanny grasp of structure and perspective are innate, or inherited from his parents. Fan’s understanding of structure and perspective are also reflected in Fan's significant accomplishments in grooming and showing dogs. He has more than 15 years of experience in these pursuits, including showing dogs in the United States, participating in grooming competitions, and conducting grooming seminars around the world. His obsession with animals, especially dogs. When he was a child, Fan often accompanied his father to the zoo to sketch, where he would spend quiet afternoons sketching. Every time Fan sees books about animals, he buys them and studies them at length. In 2009, Fan created his first sculpture, of the world-renowned Kerry Blue Terrier , Ch. Torums Scarf Michael, or “Mick” A magnificent individual, Mick was awarded Best in Show at Crufts in England in 2000. In the United States, Mick’s wins includes Best in Show at Westminster Kennel Club in Madison Square Garden in 2003, shown by professional handler Bill McFadden. Fan traveled to the United States, and presented his sculpture of Mick to McFadden, who was quite taken with the sculpture and Fan’s talents. For a number of years, Fan variously showed dogs in conformation events as a professional handler, groomed dogs in competitions, and gave grooming seminars. In 2017, Fan gradually withdrew from showing dogs as a professional handler and moved more deeply into his passion of sculpture. From 2009 through the present, Fan has received many invitations for private custom sculptures, including from handlers, breeders and dog owners. He has also been commissioned by numerous for sculptures by many all-breed kennel clubs include the century-old Santa Barbara Kennel Club, national breed clubs and the AKC museum of the dog. Fan hopes to reflect the supreme love for dogs in his sculptures. Every heavy, hard and cold bronze sculpture fills the hearts of every viewer or collector with the power of warmth, softness, and light from Fan's sincere and moving creations.
