About The Artwork

John Carstens (1967) Naoshima Pumpkin I, 2022 Brown carbon, transfer paper on ½" baltic birch plywood. 20cm x 20cm, 1cm depth Inspired by Yayoi Kusama's pumpkin after a trip to Naoshima. Laser cut circles on wood. Brown carbon soot is formed on the surface during linear engraving. Carefully, the paper is lifted from the negative space. Coated with UV archival varnish. Since ancient times, wood has been revered in Japan. Even after being cut, it's been seen as a living being. With respect, the smoke/charcoal remains, not wasted, after each circle is engraved, giving it the sepia tone. Signed by artist.

John Carstens (b. 1967). An autodidactic. The past three decades he has had successful careers in graphic design, architecture and computer programming. Now is his time to indulge in blending these interdisciplinary skills. Carstens primarily works in photography, materials, and parametric design. He has abandoned internet development after 25 years. Blunted by companies running on cycles of self induced obstacles in the name of ephemeral trends for consumers of junk. He craves creating tangible media which is open to inference versus the rules of implication. Precision of machined lines living in an organic environment created by the artist. Rhythms and patterns parody personal and corporate circumstances.
