Driftwood Octopus
Driftwood Octopus
Assembled from natural, organic materials found in the forests and riverbanks of Ontario and Quebec, Canada.

Also known for their camouflage, I have kept this octopus within the color spectrum of driftwood, following the tone of the base foundation for this piece, a small driftwood tree stump. It's tentacles are driftwood as well and the webbing between tentacles is birch bark. The head is made from perhaps the only suitable natural object for such a piece, a coconut shell. The eyes and siphons are acorn shells, with the eyes being painted yellow with black pupils. Some paint staining was also added for color matching throughout the piece.

This piece was a true joy to make, and from gathering the materials to assembly and then finalizing procedures, the total time to complete this sculpture was approximately 4 months. As with all my driftwood art, prior to assembly each part goes through a cleaning and heat treatment process, as well as a quality and strength test. Upon completion the sculpture is coated with a light protective sealant.

My art is the embodiment of nature, and I think nature should be a part of everyone's life, and their space. The natural creations of our environment are all the inspiration I need, and it brings me pleasure to re-create with the bounties it provides. As with all my art from the animal kingdom, I hope to take your mind from the concrete jungle, into the real jungle.
