About The Artwork
"Odilon" was inspired by the work of symbolist, Odilon Redon. I was especially inspired by the imagery of several of his noir prints http://www.artic.edu/aic/collections/artwork/79318?search_no=4&index=39 but the overall look of the vase is more inspired by his full color paintings. I chose to render the piece in colors inspired by sepia, bronze, copper and vellum for a warm and richer palette than Redon's black and white prints. "Odilon" also features several brown glass taxidermy eyes. I find that Redon's lavish symbolism adapts well into mosaic. The ornamental pattern adds a sensual mystique to the proto-surrealism of Redon's floating eyes.
