Kepa Oscoz is a Basque sculptor of centennial root-woods based in Behobie, France. He first became interested in the fine art of working this noble material during his travels through Morocco in the late 80s. Since then, he’s immersed himself completely in this world and spent long periods travelling extensively through Morocco and parts of southern Europe. The sculptor’s desire became to create large sculptures from these true gems. He seeks out precious root-woods from exceptional, centennial trees which had been felled through circumstance, for environmental reasons or due to natural causes; including the centennial, single-piece Argan beams of a sixteenth century house which collapsed in 1997. Most of the wood recovered is primary-root, extending from the base of the trunk, the only part of the root to allow sculptures the size of many of Kepa’s pieces. The woods used in all are priceless works of art in themselves, all finished with a dedication to detail which highlights nature’s inimitable beauty of centuries, so central to every piece.
