About The Artwork

Material reclaimed by PACE www.paceartsiowa.org and gifted for to artist in 2019 for the creation of art, from Harvester Building built in 1893 in Council Bluffs, Iowa. 'The Pioneer Implement Company, also known as the International Harvester Transfer House, is a historic building located in Council Bluffs, Iowa. Eli Shugart, Ferdinand Weis and F.R. Davis formed Pioneer Implement Company in 1893, and they built the four-story Late Victorian section of the building the same year. This was during a period of growth in the city's "Implement District,". What made this company standout is that it was locally owned and operated agricultural implement business, rather than one owned by a factory from the east. The company went out of business in 1915 and the building was taken over by International Harvester, which owned the building next door. They added the single story brick addition to the south in 1927. When IH closed their Council Bluffs operation in 1964 they were the only farm implement that was still in business in the Implement District. The building was occupied by various businesses after that, including United Parcel Service. The renovation of the historic building in 2019 transformed the space into a cultural center called Hoff Family Arts & Cultural Center. The Hoff Center includes a theater, gallery, artist studios, classrooms, teaching kitchen, and more. It is the home for nonprofits including PACE, Chanticleer Theater, Kanesville Symphony Orchestra, American Midwest Ballet, and Kitchen Council. This sculpture is a prototype for a 14' exterior sculpture with projection mapping and internal lighting that would be an exterior welcoming sculpture with changeable informative graphics depicting the performances or events at Hoff. The figure is pushing through, bending, and stepping over steel as if it is no obstacle; pushing through the veil of everyday life into the wonder and excitement of the arts.

"My purpose in life is to help others see, feel, & heal through art". Welded Sculpture is Woodford’s passion. Her work is a dialog with organic flow, movement and scale. Woodford grew up on the East Coast in Southern Maryland, but has called the Midwest home for many years. She travels between South Carolina, Iowa, Nebraska, Dallas, and Arizona where she creates, has representation, or teaches. Traveling enables me to teach, be of service to others and broaden my views." The figurative series she creates depicts her thinking on current as well as historical matters and her perceptions from a female viewpoint. The work is inherently autobiographical while also leaving space for the viewer's interpretative dialog. Woodford's goal is to create healing sculptures that embody a sense of hope. "We are all connected. We are all the same, and could see each other as mirrors but for the smoke in-between.”
