About The Artwork

This piece addresses western understanding of the Lingam and Yoni of Hinduism. Commonly, westerners view the Lingam as a symbolic phallus and the yoni as vagina. The Lingam is typically seated in the yoni and milk is poured over the Lingam flowing to the yoni and out the pour spout. This act is interpreted to represent sex with the "pour spout" being the "spilling of seed" or birth. In actuality the combined pieces represent generative energy. The Shiva Lingam represents divine energy coming down from the heavens, hot and into the earth-Yoni, creating life. Milk is poured over the union to cool the energy flowing from the spout. "Polyplasmic Lingam" addresses this misinterpretation in two ways. The Shiva Lingam rejects the identity of the animalian sex organ in favor of a cellular and atomic option. Transparent pods with hovering nuclei comprise the lingam, while the Yoni, symbolic of physical matter, both solid and heavy, cups the source of divine energy. The productive spout is removed in favor of a vessel to collect the excess energy directly ejecting from the pods in the form of threads. The yoni thus provides energy for more pods to grow and the union becomes self sustaining. Media included: fabric, polystyrene, thread, cellulose, concrete, glass beads, paint and fishing line.

email is sdtompkins at live.com IG is stacytompkinsart I have work available in every price point Two-dimensional work: Inspired by microscopy images, themes of spiritual energy and hidden knowledge, my work explores the invisible realms in which we are enveloped, but rarely acknowledge. Sculpture: My mixed media sculptures focus on the psyche, ritual and meaning-making. The works deconstruct the transcultural aspects of ritual, sacred tool/ ritual object evolution, and the role biology plays in the archetypal development of deities. The pieces raise questions surrounding the origins of belief and spiritual identity.
