About The Artwork

Pride Apocalypse consists of resin casts of the 19th-century book The Apocalypse Explained. In this book, as in other fundamentalist thought, homosexuality (and gay rights) is a sign of the apocalypse. To disempower this kind of thinking I levitated the cast books so that they fly like the pride flag. I found one of the 1891 editions of The Apocalypse Explained in a thrift shop. Researching the book, I found that Emanuel Swedenborg wrote The Apocalypse Explained in 1757 as a six-volume treatise in which he explains each verse of the Bible’s Book of Revelation concerning the apocalypse. Here was a book written in the 18th-century, reprinted in 19th-century edition - and I’m confounded that in the 21st-century people are still heading down the road of apocalyptic thinking. I created a mold of the book and cast the book in the colors of the pride flag. The original cover design is retained as an imprint in the cast resin books, which I then gold leafed. The sculpture comes with the mounting elements to hang the books and the shelf. When hit with a spotlight, the colors of the pride flag reflect on the wall behind the sculpture. I’ve created the Pride Apocalypse sculpture in an edition of 10, one of which has sold. Pride Apocalypse has exhibited throughout the United States, including the Barrett Art Center, NY; Reuben Saunders Gallery, Wichita, KS; Method Gallery, Seattle, WA; and Spaceworks Gallery, Tacoma, WA.
