About The Artwork

'Pug' is the eleventh model in The Humbelles Series, 3D printed figurines of about 9 centimeters in height, inspired by socalled ‘Hummels’ (kitsch little porcelain figures that are widely collected). Every issue comes in a limited edition of 30. Every model is hand signed and numbered and comes with a Certificate of Authenticity. Price is including shipment and VAT. Different sizes and/or changes in color are available on request. Mail me at eric@ericvanstraaten.com In my work I try to be inspired by popular culture and to combine elements in the scenery that give a surreal feeling to it. I aim for physical expressiveness in my sculptures, while preserving a certain digital feel. It has been said my sculptures contain a weirdly eroticized corporeality, although the models are completely virtual. Like Barbie, they will never be real human, nor will they be based on a real human. They are a complete figment of my imagination. Balancing on the edge of kitsch, the marzipan-like quality of the ProJet material resonates beautifully with the apparent innocence of the scenery. I believe there is no other technique that can achieve the level of hypersurrealism made possible in 3D computer modelling. Industrial 3D printing is the only technique that can be used to make full color digital models tangible, close to the original design. Full color 3D printing isn't that simple as most people think. Because of the fragility of the model right out of the machine, it has to be postprocessed intensively to acquire a beautiful finish. I believe that I am one of the few people who can do this. Note: small unevenesses, rings and spots are part of the current standard in 3D-printing. Discolorations over time can occur due to unknown parameters in relation to the new technique. Caution: material is extremely sensitive to water, keep out of direct sunlight, best kept in a perspex box or glass bell.

I am an artist who makes sculptures exclusively in full color 3D printing. I was born in 1969 in Leiden and grew up in Haarlem, both in The Netherlands. Up till six years ago I sculpted my detailed statues by hand before I began to learn the art of 3D design. Within a year I was able to produce my first 3D printed piece. My work was soon picked up by several known galleries and collectors. I have been successful with my 3D printed sculptures ever since. At this moment my sculptures are sold through galleries in the Netherlands, Belgium, USA and Japan. To my great honor, my sculpture ‘Pelican’ is featured on the ‘Lucas Museum of Narrative Art’s’ website as a representative example of work that will be exhibited as a part of the collection. Check it out here: http://www.lucasmuseum.org/collection/category/digital-sculpture-201.html I believe there is no other technique in which I’m capable of achieving such a great degree of hyper surrealism as in 3D computer modeling. And 3D printing is the only technique that can be used to make my models tangible, closest to the original computer design. I aim for physical expressiveness in form and content, while the sculptures remain to have a certain digital feel to them. It is said my sculptures contain a weirdly eroticized corporeality, although the models are completely virtual (like Barbie, they will never be real human). Balancing on the edge of kitsch, the marzipan-like quality of the material resonates beautifully with the apparent innocence of the scenery I think.
