This sculpture is a three-dimensional representation of the face of Quetzalcoatl-Ehecatl, one manifestation of the feathered serpent deity, as depicted in various ancient Aztec codices. The model for this sculpture, Cisco, is a Los Angeles native and Mexican-National, which speaks to the ever-present link to one’s ancestral origins. The piñata detail in tissue paper alludes to the fragility of this ancestral knowledge as it is passed on through generations. Evelyn Quijas Godinez is a Los Angeles-born and based artist working across a spectrum of mediums. Her works embody the syncretic aspects of her Mexican-American, European-Indigenous provenance. Quijas Godinez incorporates found objects, ancient artifacts, and cultural remnants from both parents’ hometown in rural Jalisco, to piece together a fragmented past through her sculptures, installations, mixed-media collages, and paintings. By juxtaposing the past with present-day LA, she emphasizes its ubiquity through time and across borders. EvelynQuijasGodinez.com
