ABOUT THE ARTWORK
Ritmè, Dutch for rhythm. The movement of life, sounds or forms caught in the repeat of an artists' will. In much of his work, Matthew Harris is inspired by the rhythms and movements in nature. He loves the challenge to capture the feeling and power of a flock of birds or a school of fish moving together and to arrest in in a permanent and powerful way. Matthew's desire is for his artwork to spark curiosity in the viewer, and in the process of discovery one will find themes of movement, life cycles, and the beauty of life. Although working in an abstract manner, in the process, Matthew seeks to speak literally about the beauty of life and the natural world. Ritmè was made by the beautiful process of hot forging steel and finished with a rust patina. By working directly with the material, Matthew was able to directly impart texture, form and dialogue in the metal. This process is permanent and the final piece in view is direct from the artist hammer and hand.

MATTHEW HARRIS 1.443.553.6642. Matthew Harris was born in 1980, in Maryland. He served a traditional 4 year apprenticeship with Master blacksmith Alphonsus Moolenshot, who was born and trained in the Netherlands. After completing his apprenticeship with Mr. Moolenschot in 2000, Matthew went on to work in several architectural metalwork and industrial forging shops. He also studied art and business at Cecil College. Since 2005 he has owned, and operated Matthew Harris Studio located in Perryville, MD. Matthew oversees the design, fabrication, and installation of all the custom fencing, gates, sculptures, and metalwork that the studio creates. His specialty is hot forging one of a kind forms, textures, and elements. He has built a unique and impressive mix of industrial forging equipment and cranes to accomplish this work. His work is found in many businesses, homes, and public spaces. "Life is a collation of patterns, rhythm, and movement of form, light, texture, and elements. I forge and shape metal in an effort to capture the fleeting beauty of these experiences.
