Robert Holmes (1927 - 2016) created "Runner" in 1990. This cast bronze is from a limited edition, with only four more to cast. The dimensions do not include the base; it is usually mounted to a 36" diameter plate. This piece is taken to a 320 grit surface smooth finish with some texture in the recesses. A brief bio: Robert Holmes was born in 1927 in Missouri. Robert put himself through college, earning a degree in civil engineering from the University of Arizona. He started a business Arizona, where he became was one of the most successful custom luxury home builders in the burgeoning Phoenix area for three decades. Robert sold his construction business in 1981. It was at that point he decided to pursue his sculpting passion exclusively. Robert and his wife Edith moved to Sea Ranch, a community 2 hours north of San Francisco. That is where he began his second career as a sculptor, and Edith as his partner and agent. Agreeing to take this new direction on life together, Robert and Edith forged a renewed partnership for twenty five years. In 1989 Robert opened his own bronze art foundry he called Bronze Plus, in a town about an hour and a half from Sea Ranch. This allowed him to control the means of production, thus ensuring quality for his galleries and personal clients. His assistant and foundry manager, Michael J. Pollare produced all his work since 1989 After Robert's passing, Mr. Pollare purchased the foundry and has exclusive casting, sales, and distribution rights for Robert Holmes Sculpture. As for his work, Robert seldom talked about it and granted only a handful of interviews, mainly due to the fact that he was nearly deaf most his life and felt that his sculpture spoke for itself. For a Robert Holmes Retrospective and a one man show, professor Richard Warren, Art Historian and curator at Princeton University and Stanford University stated "Robert Holmes, although self taught, is intuitively dead center of the development of modern sculpture. The restless, thrusting energy of Rodin, the abstraction of Brancusi, the expressionism of Lachaise, the symbolic power of Moore, are all echoed in his work."
