About The Artwork

I've always been a fan of Johnny Cash, he was my grand fathers favorite artist, my Dad's and I guess I just kind of followed suit. I've been leaning how to sculpt wood for the past couple years and although I have carved the man in black before I held off trying this image until I knew I was ready. This piece was carved from a 6" thick slab made from doweled 2x6s and carved down to a half inch thick, the middle finger sits 4 inches off the background. Like some of my other musician pieces this guitar has real strings (I actually took these off my acoustic, I didn't want new strings to throw off the vintage look of the piece). The tuners are carved in to the wood using sheared off, shaped, and polished stainless lag bolts for the upper parts. the guitar has been hollowed out and does produce sound when strummed. The guitar has an eastern red cedar bridge and a resin saddle on both ends, as well as a martin sound hole label. the three zippers are real and have been set flush with the suit using a router to make them appear sewn in. the guitar strap has a real strap cord connecting it to the guitar. I did a tremendous amount or research in prep oration for this piece, being the only known photo was in black and white, colors were the biggest issue, at one point I was corresponding back and forth with John Carter Cash (Johnny and June Carter's Son and future recipient of one ow my works) trying to nail down the color of his jumpsuit. Every artist rendition of this piece gives him a tan suit as that's what the inmates at San Quentin wore in the late 60's but Johnny wasn't wearing one of their suits it was one that he had made for the times that he played inside prisons and it was orange to fit in at any prison he played at. Almost all artists give him a nylon 12 string guitar because upon first glance at the blurry picture it does look like it... kind of but I know Johnny never played a 12 string when he played live he always had his '43 Martin D-35S that was his signature guitar, where the other artist got confused is the tuners that appear at the top of his guitars neck that actually belong to the bass player standing behind him. This painting is as accurate as they come I even had a digital image made so I could see the whited of his eyes because the original never looked right to me. Only way you'll get a closer vision of the real thing is if you were there that summer night.
