About The Artwork

This piece is one of my further investigations into the relationship between organic and inorganic materials, and resistance to force placed on them. In this work the mirror finish stainless steel is bent over the fulcrum of wood and restrained to the wall with four "L" shaped screws. The gap between the ends of the steel and the wall is 1/2 inch, creating a resistance against the point of contact with the wood and the tension placed against the metal by the bending and attachment to the wall. This piece is shipped in two parts and two different containers: one box and one wood crate.

Brian Thomas Jones lives and works in Los Angeles, CA. He is a multiple disciplinary artist whose wide practice encompasses painting, sculpture, photography, and installation art. All of these areas are represented in this portfolio. A fascination with gesture and action underlies his large-scale Contemporary Expressionist paintings. In his recent work, Jones executes active mark-making utilizing broad sweeps of the arm with large brushes to make wide strokes that are aleatory in nature. His palette of multitudinous colors is arrived at organically during the painting process. “I want the surface to be energetic and active enough to pull the viewer into the work, engulfing them in an exuberance of color. I want the viewer to become somewhat disoriented by the lack of composition, yet have an emotional experience through various areas of interest that speak to them personally.” In other paintings, the “Atmospheres,” his works are nuanced with smooth strokes and muted colors. While still using large gestures in mark-making, he blends and smooths the surface so the viewer has an etherial, liminal experience that transitions from the waking to the dreaming. These works are closer to Impressionistic in that they are softer and more serene than later work. They embody a sense of magical realism that's neither representative nor completely abstract. The "Aggregations" series is a body of 3D wall work and sculptures, bridging the slippage between sculpture and painting. They are composed of various cast-off pieces of wood assembled randomly into formally constructed objects. These are then painted with colors that are "L.A. centric," derived from color combinations both harmonious and discordant. Their 3D structure allows the viewer multiple points of entry in which to explore the work. With such a varied yet cohesive oeuvre of work, Brian Thomas Jones remains one of the more interesting artists on the L.A. art scene. In addition, Brian is available for commissions and has placed multiple custom works in the homes and offices of discriminating collectors.
