Respondere Sculpture

"Respondere" is a piece in a body of work entitled Prevails Unpoetic" - an anagram for visual perception. This is a concept from which all of my work derives. The use of wood to create curved sculptures speaks to cutting, bending and manipulating of structure. It also references for Black women the influence of bias and how the survival of such influence actually molds women into complex individuals, able to fluidly mold and adapt to microaggressions and the like. This body of work pushes to remind viewers that Black women will not be cut down by racism or sexism. This piece uses African hardwoods wenge and padauk with copper inlays. It is completely cut and finished by hand.
